School has begun

So far it's gone well, a little hectic at first, but hopefully this first actual week will slow the pace a bit.

Maddmans teacher is really nice and good with faces, I was glad to be immediatly recognized when I came to pick him up. She glanced up at me and turned to him. (They were all in the hallway waiting for parents)

LittleMan's school is neat, the room is huge and has two classes in it. The first two days were really a meet and greet so we shall see how a first real week of pre-k goes.

The past weekend was a recoup weekend, nothing much done. We just relaxed and recharged. Baked some bread too ^-^  The plan is to do that once a week to help with the amount of bread we buy. Were are going through about two loafs in a week and half span. Of course this varies depending on the menu for that week, but it's an average.
So Sat's loaf was just basic wheat as we are planning on making our favorite broccoli and cheese soup this weekend and the bread will be good with it. If it lasts that long. I'll most likely be making a new loaf between now and the coming Sunday. *chuckles*
Which I honestly don't mind, better bread = healthier kiddos.
Besides -insert sneaky voice here- LittleMan's school requires he bring veggies every day......so I'm going to try to work some into recipes so he'll get his serving and I don't have to toss uneaten veggies at the end of the day.
Got any favorite veggie included breads? I'm willing to work either Bread Machine (which is the norm for our bread making) or oven!

Shots, records and Dr's Visits oh my.

So shots. No one really likes them and it's apparent we have to have them.

I really feel bad for the boys when I have to take them to get shots. Which I do today.

There are several things that urk me about our Dr's office and mainly it's  the nurses. (Please, I know they are busy and I know they do a lot, but it's their career choice not some job they picked up because they had no other choice, they could at least show a little patience and pride in their work. I'm not saying they are all this way.)

Let me give you a little background, Our pediatrician has seen the boys since birth and we love him. He's awesome. And since both boys hardly ever get more than a cold we rarely have to go in. So generally when I call the office it's not in the best of circumstances, I'm looking for a work in. So I call early, like right after they open so I can see if they have availability. I know they have a slew of patients scheduled on average and I'm understanding about that.
Recently our Dr decided to move to another practice. Not just another office, but a different field essentially. He's not available for us anymore. Which stinks. One of the other Dr's in the office has seen the boys from time to time, but I do not like him as much. Part of this is that he seems to diagnose with an ear infection nearly every time we see him and of course that requires an antibiotic. Which as parents we've all heard not to over use. So I'm wary of him. Our main Dr has told us he respects his diagnosis as it's something that he's specialized in and so we've trusted him on it.

Now were kind of stuck unless we switch to a new clinic because the the other Dr at the clinic is someone we haven't had any experience with.

Back to the nurses. When I call I rarely ever get someone who's in a good mood. They always seem cranky and short. I know they have a fairly high call volume but being short on conversation and being short with someone are two different things.
When I called earlier this week to see about getting an appointment sometime within this week or the next week or two I was told it would be around a month before there would be an opening. Now I realize they are trying to fit all of the other Dr's patients in as they can and I told them this, but I also explained that the reason I was requesting an appointment was that the school requested a physical and that his shots be updated.

So they told me a nurse would call me later to see about scheduling me into any space they could find between now and the end of the month. And so they did. I missed the call having been in the other room when the phone rang so I called back immediately. When I got the nurse on the line she started in on me about how Usually you have to call about a month in advance for shots and so on. My reply was that I've never had that problem before when calling the previous Dr we'd been seeing at that clinic and I know they are trying to fit more patients in because of his absence but that the last time Little Man was seen at the clinic we were told he was up to date on his shots. Besides, non of the parents looking to enter their children in the pre-k program/kindergarten would have had the physical form in hand a month in advance. It's something we were given when checking in last week.

I was a little frustrated to say the least.
I'm tired of them not updating the records and would a note in it saying he needs such and such in a certain time frame be so hard? It's something they could keep a stack of, "ok this child just had his 3 year shots, he'll need his 4 year by ______________" blank being a date they could put in. Parent's don't always remember until the last min and if they went about giving a good "have by" date most would be easier to schedule.

So today we have to go get shots and a physical. After today, I'll be hunting down a new pediatrician because I'm tired of the nurses at that clinic giving us crap.
If it had just been this once it would be understandable as they are overbooked with patients, but there was no notice to patients that he was leaving their clinic so what did they expect?

Done ranting.

Maddman got his school haircut yesterday. Little Man's is a style I can cut on my own as his curl is forgiving, but M's is something I'm not going to try, lol. Trim up the top if it gets a little shaggy yes, full on buzz of the sides and back, no. It's cute and I'll share pics later of them being goofballs when I tried to get a picture of it.

Back to prepping for school!

School is closing in

With school starting next week it's hard to know just how to prepare.
At our house it's going to bed at the time we did last year and getting up on time. We've been working in workbooks all summer long and this week has been like crunch time studying for a test. We've been doing more pages than normal and playing more educational games.

I don't want the boys to get tired of school work before it even starts though so we keep trying to find new fun things to do. I'm wondering what others do to have fun in those last few days of summer break to prep for school.

One thing were going to do today is go get haircuts and pick out Little Man's towel for naptime. I'm hoping that most of the summer towels (with the characters) will be on sale by now so he can pick something fun out. If not, I'll be doing a little design work later with some fun fabric on what ever color plain towel he picks. I have a feeling it will be red as it's his favorite color ^-^

When I was younger our last week before school started was always on the lake, and it was always a blast. At this time that's not something we can afford to do, though  we'd love to, but we do want to start some great family traditions. Does your family have one just for this time of year?

Nap times

Why is it that when your a kid....you don't want to take a nap...but get a little older and all you want to do is nap?

My boys don't like naps anymore, and as the schools have weaned Maddman off of them it's harder and harder to get Little Man to take one. At the beginning of the summer I only made Maddman lay down until Little Man fell asleep. Which worked out well. And other days I didn't make them nap at all.

However , and this delves a bit into our bedtime routine/time, the boys did not go to sleep when sent to bed. They stayed up playing quietly until 10ish. Their bedtime is 8pm. When school starts, and starting tonight, it's back to 7:30 with exceptions being the weekend and events. So I made them both lay down to nap. I knew they were both tired from being up late and that they were crabby. So no surprise that twenty minutes later they were still up and fussing with naptime. They did both finally take a nap thankfully. I was not having two crabby kiddos all afternoon/evening.

*Sigh*
I want a nap now.

Both of my boys will be heading to school next week. One will venture into 1st grade and the other will begin Pre-K 4.

I'm excited and sad at the same time. My house will be semi lonely during the middle of the day and yet I cannot wait for it. I can't help wondering if that makes me a bad mom, but then I remember, we play it up that parents in this country are excited about their kids going back to school every year. I can't imagine I'm the only mom out there jumping at the thought she might actually get a clean house again.

Or time to watch that show on the home improvement network you've been missing.
My hope is that I can get enough done within the first month that I can crack some projects for the house with a whip. Our house needs some TLC and I need the time to do it.

Pre-K looks interesting, Maddman (my older boy) didn't get to go for that and I really wish he had. Kindergarten was odd at first and I think having been in pre-k things might have been easier. Who knew these days the kindergartners were having to write sentences. And do subtraction? That was 1st grade for us.

Having the right teacher has helped in that regard as well. I cannot say enough good words about my son's K teacher. She was awesome. Hoping that when we transfer the Little Man over to that school next year we can get her again.

1st grade seems like it will bring it's own challenges, though I'm sure nothing we can't handle. I'm excited that Maddman will get to learn an instrument. And not just a recorder.

So what are your goals for when the kids all migrate back to classrooms? Going back to class yourself or perhaps like me, you've got a long to-do list waiting patiently.

Hi there

Welcome to what I hope will be a learning adventure for myself and anyone who happens to drop by.

As I've noted in the About this blog section, I don't want you to think this is going to just be about the happy moments in a childs life. Yes I'll share those as well, but I want to sit down every day for at least a few minutes and share what's going on in hopes that it not only helps me to become a better parent, but perhaps you as well.

I promise to open up with nearly all my flaws (yes nearly, I can't promise I'll always share my deepest darkest secrets, it's a family blog) but this will be my project.

From this point on I want to share our daily trials, tribulations, questions and laughter with anyone who happens to pop in here. So lets jump in with both feet.
